The invention discloses a beam scale comprising: a beam; a non-linear read-out scale fixed along the length of the beam; a load attachment point at a fixed location near one end of the beam; a balance point member, with a balance point and indicator fixed to a mid-point thereof, slidable along substantially the length of the beam. The balance point is adapted to be vertically supported such that the beam will balance horizontally when the moment on one side of the balance point equals the moment on the opposite side thereof. The beam itself could be the counter-weight, or a counter-weight could be attached to the beam at a fixed location near the end thereof opposite the load attachment point. The counter-weight does not move along the beam, but rather the balance point moves between the counter-weight and the load, providing an extended range of operable loads.
