EXTENDED RANGE SPEED CONTROL FOR DC DRIVE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A speed control for a DC motor drive having regenerative braking and field reversing is able to operate in the forward and reverse direction at speeds in excess of motor base speed, i.e. in excess of a speed corresponding to rated voltage and full motor field. A sensor provides a signal representing armature current and from this a signal is derived representing IR drop in the armature. A sensor provides a signal representing voltage applied to the armature. The difference between these two signals represents counter emf and the counter emf signal and the main control signal (the difference between desired speed and actual speed) is used to control the power supplied to the field winding to reduce the field strength and permit operation in excess of motor base speed.
