ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A document reproduction machine having an extended range of magnifications empolys a scanning optical system which is controlled as to scanning speed and distance of travel by the selected magnifiaction. In an extended reduciton copying range the speed of the scanning optical system is automatically in- creased in proportion to the selected magnification reduction, but the increase in scanning distance is limited to the platen size. Clutch means are employed to terminate the normally increasing scanning distance in the extended reduction range.
