An extensible loudspeaker unit is adapted for use with a portable computer that has a computer housing formed with a loudspeaker-mounting cavity. The loudspeaker unit includes a loudspeaker mechanism, and an extensible open-back loudspeaker enclosure that confines a volume-variable sound space and that has an open first end with the loudspeaker mechanism mounted thereto, and an open second end adapted to be mounted on the computer housing in the loudspeaker-mounting cavity. The loudspeaker enclosure is adapted to be extended from the loudspeaker-mounting cavity to enlarge the sound space and move the loudspeaker mechanism outward relative to the loudspeaker-mounting cavity. The loudspeaker enclosure is adapted to be retracted toward the loudspeaker-mounting cavity to contract the sound space and move the loudspeaker mechanism adjacent to the loudspeaker-mounting cavity.
