ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device comprising an extensible rod surrounded by a metal sheath with the rod emerging from one end of the sheath, particularly for use in electrical insulator assemblies where the rod is a glass fibre reinforced plastic rod, in which the rod is subject to tensile stress and is considerably more extensible than the metal sheath and in which elastic buffer means is provided for transferring tensile stress between the rod and the sheath, and in which the compliance of the buffer means is greater in the region nearer the end of the sheath than in regions away from the end. Various means of achieving this variation of compliance are disclosed, allowing various methods of assembly.
