The present invention features an apparatus and method for extending, position sensing and folding the ties of a tie bag into the body of the bag. The apparatus and method of the invention accomplish the position sensing end folding of the ties as the webbing of the bag is rapidly moving. The ties are first extended and then folded within the web on-the-fly. The ties of the flexible web are caused to pass between two extension plates, in which respective air nozzles are located. Air is transversely passed over the upper and lower webbing surfaces via the nozzles. In so doing, the flexible ties are caused to flatten, smooth and extend perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the web. The air under pressure also prevents the ties from contacting the walls of the plates. The extended ties are now oriented so as to be acceptable to both the sizing and folding operations.
