An external memory device (10) has a body (11), a memory board (12) with a connector (24), a board holder (13) for fixing the memory board (12) to the body with the connector (24) projected to the outside, and a cap (14) detachable from the board holder (13) and protecting the connector (24). Means (38, 37, 40, 32) for preventing mis-assembly are arranged between the body (11), memory board (12), and board holder (13).
