An automatic firearm, and particularly, an externally-driven automatic firearm for use in conjunction with aircraft or armoured vehicles. The housing of the automatic firearm contains a rotatable cylindrical breech mechanism with a cavity for receiving a loaded shell and a chamber for containing the shell during firing. Slidably mounted within the cavity is a breech block for ramming the shell into the chamber and locking the shell in place during firing. The breech block has a cam on its outer surface that acts in cooperation with an elliptical slot on the interior wall of the housing that causes the breech block to move longitudinally backward and forward within the cavity as the breech mechanism rotates. The rotation of the breech mechanism is controlled by an external drive mechanism. With each rotation of the breech mechanism the breech block soft rams a loaded shell into the chamber and retracts to permit the spent easing to be ejected and to permit a new shell to be loaded. The drive mechanism halts the rotation of the breech mechanism during firing of a shell, which, because of the cooperation of the cam and the elliptical slot, fixes the breech block in place. The breech mechanism contains multiple chambers and cavities, as in a conventional revolver, allowing the firing rate of the automatic firearm to be increased.
