EXTRACTION OF REUSABLE WATER FROM A MINERAL MINING PROCESS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The mining industry consumes a great quantity of water to remove various minerals from the earth as well as any various tar sand oil extraction processes. The water is, in its final state, usually in the form of an intract- able stable clay slime with the water content being around 80% to 90% thereof and at the present time large lagoons are built to hold these waste slimes. The present inven- tion includes a process for the treatment of the slime which includes reducing the pH by the addition of an acidic compound and then treating the slime with the reduced pH with an anionic surface active agent to create flocculation. The flocculated effluent slime is then treated with a chlo- rinated hydrocarbon diluted with an aromatic solvent of the BTX type which is then centrifuged to produce three physical layers of material comprising water, asphaltics and clay. This particular process is for the treatment of an extrac- tion slime such as an athabasca tar sand extraction slime although it can be used in other mineral mining operations which uses a substantial amount of water.
