A B S T R A C T In a method for extractive distillation which comprises separating a hydrocarbon mixture into relatively difficultly soluble hydrocarbons and relatively easily soluble hydrocarbons by an extractive distillation device including at least two evaporators for the starting hydro- carbon mixture, an extractive distillation column, a strip- ping column and a rectifying column by using a polar solvent; the improvement wherein (1) the polar solvent discharged at a high temper- ature from the bottom of the stripping column is recycled to the extractive distillation column after it has been cooled to a suitable temperature through a step where the solvent gives heat to a reboiler of the extractive distil- lation column, a step where the solvent gives heat to a reboiler of the rectifying column and a step where the solvent successively gives heat to the two or more evapora- tors, and (2) the starting hydrocarbon mixture is heated in two or more evaporators, it is evaporated in a first evaporator to a pressure necessary for introduction into the extractive distillation column and then fed to the extractive distillation column, and after evaporation in a second and subsequent evaporators, the pressure of the hydrocarbon mixture is elevated, as desired, to a pressure required for introduction into the extractive distillation column by means of a compressor and then it is fed into the extractive distillation column.
