Abstract of the Disclosure An apparatus and method for encoding only the maximum and minimum values of an analog signal in the presence of broadband noise so that the original analog signal may be subjectively reproduced to the human sensory system is disclosed. The basic apparatus includes a differentiator for detecting the times of occurrence of minimum and maximum values of the analog waveform including the minimum and maximum values of the noise superimposed thereon and for converting the times of occurrence into time-axis zero crossings, and a clipping circuit having a bandwidth substan- tially greater than the bandwidth of the analog signal for encoding the time-axis zero crossings into transitions of a binary signal. The binary signal contains information solely concerning the times of occurrence of the minimum and maximum values of the original analog signal and may be presented directly to the human sensory system or after further signal processing. Because the human sensory system is more receptive to the occurrence of minimum and maximum values of a waveform, the sensory system will substantially reproduce the original analog signal from the encoded waveform.
