Water, which is friendly to the environment, is most effectively used as a foaming agent to thereby reduce the amount of foaming agents influencing the environment. An extruded thermoplastic synthetic resin foam having excellent heat-insulating properties is provided which has large and small cells and in which the small cells can be present in an increased proportion. The process for producing the foam comprises incorporating 0.2 to 10 parts by weight of bentonite into 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin and using water as a foaming agent. The extruded thermoplastic synthetic resin foam obtained by the process has a density of 15 to 50 kg/m?3~ and has an excellent cell structure in which the cells contained in the foam have an average cell diameter of 0.7 mm or smaller or are composed mainly of small cells having a cell diameter of 0.25 mm or smaller and large cells having a cell diameter of 0.3 to 1 mm.
L'eau, qui est sans danger pour l'environnement, constitue le meilleur agent moussant à utiliser pour la réduction de la quantité d'agents moussants nuisant à l'environnement. L'invention concerne une mousse de résine synthétique thermoplastique possédant d'excellents propriétés thermo-isolantes et constituée de cellules de petite et grande taille, les petites cellules pouvant être majoritaires en nombre. Le procédé de production de la mousse consiste à incorporer 0,2 à 10 parties en poids de bentonite dans 100 parties en poids d'une résine thermoplastique et à utiliser de l'eau en tant qu'agent moussant. La résine synthétique thermoplastique extrudée obtenue par ledit procédé présente une densité de 15 à 50 kg/m<3> et possède une structure cellulaire excellente formée de cellules possédant un diamètre moyen de 0,7 mm ou de cellules principalement de petites taille, d'un diamètre de 25 mm ou moins, et de grandes cellules présentant un diamètre de 0,3 à 1 mm.
