A fabric softening composition comprising one or more amine softening materials and one or more pH adjusting agents, wherein the pH of an aqueous liquor obtained by diluting said fabric softening composition to a concentration of 200 ppm of the amine materials has a pH which is equal to or below the pK a of the amine materials. Preferably the composition is a liquid satisfying the following condition: 1.5 < pK a (pH adjuster) < pK a (amine)
