ABSTRACT A fabric softening composition comprises a water- insoluble cationic fabric softener, a water-soluble cationic or nonionic surfactant and a hydrophobic adjunct which is either a non-cyclic hydrocarbon or a fatty acid ester of a monohydric alcohol. The composition is in the form of a dispersion of anisotropic softener phase in an isotropic aqueous surfactant solution phase. The composition has improved softening effectiveness combined with good phase stability and low viscosity.
