A fabric softening composition comprising a compound of formula (I), in which R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from C1-C4 alkyl groups or C2-C4 alkenyl groups, a is from 1 to 4, X- is a compatible anion and R4 and R5 are independently selected from C12-C22 alkyl or alkenyl groups, the sum of the chain lengths of R4 and R5 preferably being at least 30.
