A self-contained breathing apparatus (200) for emergency response personnel has face mask (208) with a first port (214) connected by a hose (206) to a tank of compressed air. Back-up smoke inhalation protection is provided for imminent life-threatening situations by configuring a face mask with a canister (224) containing a filter medium (234), an inlet opening (226) through which air enters, and an outlet coupling (230) for attachment to a second port (218) of the face mask. In normal situations the mask is supplied with air from the tank, but should the tank supply become depleted, the canister can be activated. A use evidencing mechanism is operatively connected to the canister to indicate use of the air filtering system. This mechanism may be a non-reusable cover (236) applied over the inlet opening, and/or a valve in the second port of the face mask with a portion that breaks away upon opening of the valve.
L'invention porte sur un appareil respiratoire (200) autonome pour personnels d'intervention d'urgence comportant un masque facial (208) muni d'un premier orifice (214) relié à un réservoir d'air comprimé par un tuyau (206). Une protection de secours contre les inhalations de fumées dans des situations de dangers mortels consiste à doter le masque d'une cartouche (224) contenant un milieu filtrant (234), d'un orifice d'admission (226) d'air et d'un raccord de sortie (230) relié à un deuxième orifice (218) du masque. Dans les situations normales, le masque est alimenté par l'air du réservoir, mais, en cas d'épuisement de la réserve, le filtre entre en action, et un mécanisme indicateur fonctionnellement relié au filtre indique que le système de filtrage est en service. Ce mécanisme peut consister en un opercule (236) non réutilisable monté sur l'ouverture d'admission et/ou en une soupape placée dans le deuxième orifice du masque et dont une partie se brise lors de l'ouverture de la soupape.
