Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to a receiving facsimile unit for reproducing dark-light variations on a copy medium re- presenting a facsimile of a remotely located document at a transmitting unit. The receiving unit includes a writer for reproducing dark-light variations on a copy medium. It also includes a demodulator for demodulating received sig- nals representing the dark-light variations, the demodulator being coupled to the writer. The demodulator generates a handshake signal for transmission to the transmitting unit. The handshake signal is transmitted in predetermined inter- vals during transmission of a document in which the received signals are absent. Preferably, the handshake signals are of short duration as compared with each of the intervals.
