An IP facsimile technique which establishes a real-time IP connection for facsimile transmissions without the use of dedicated facsimile servers. A receiving facsimile device converts a given destination address, e.g., a electronic mail address and/or a telephone number, into a particular IP address associated with a sending facsimile device and utilizing the IP address establishes a direct IP connection between the sending and receiving locations for transmitting the facsimile message. Advantageously, the IP facsimile communication is made without requiring intermediate message conversions, i.e., hops, and does not require a dedicated facsimile server located in close proximity to the receiving destination.
