A block of composite material includes a dielectric material with a dielectric constant of ~ d = 4.66 and which is at least 4 µm thick and has electrically conductive microparticles randomly distributed throughout. The composite material exhibits an optical bistability without cavity feedback. The microparticles must be nearly uniform in size and of spherical diameter much smaller than the wavelength of light in the particle. The composite, when illuminated by laser light in the range of 500 nm and of varying intensity, becomes opaque at a critical input intensity and stays opaque until the input intensity reaches a certain level both below and above the intensity at which it initially became opaque. Thus the material behaves as an optical switch and a limiter.
Cette invention concerne un bloc de matériau composite renfermant un diélectrique à constante diélectrique ~ d = 4.66 dont l'épaisseur est d'au moins 4 m et qui comporte à la grandeur des microparticules électroconductrices distribuées au hasard. Le matériau composite a une bistabilité optique intrinsèque car il ne nécessite pas l'utilisation d'une cavité externe ou d'autres moyens de rétroaction optique. Les microparticules sphériques doivent avoir une taille quasiment uniforme et présenter un diamètre beaucoup plus petit que la longueur d'onde de la lumière dans la particule. Lorsqu'il est éclairé par un faisceau laser d'environ 500 nm et d'intensité variable, le composite devient opaque à une intensité critique d'éclairement et demeure opaque jusqu'à ce que l'intensité baisse ou augmente d'un degré donné par rapport à l'intensité opacifiante initiale. Cette caractéristique du matériau permet de l'utiliser comme commutateur optique et limiteur de rayonnement optique.
