A heat transfer apparatus includes a member (18) defining a wall (66) exposed to fluid flow in a predetermined direction of flow; and a plurality of turbulators (100) disposed on the wall. Each turbulator (100) includes an upright front face (102) which generally faces the direction of flow, and a back face (104) which defines a ramp-like shape tapering from the front face (102) to the wall (66).
