A novel quick release fastener system which is used as an axle system for efficient and reliable attachment, disengagement and reattachment of a component secured by the fastener system. The axle system of the invention includes a bearing defining a wheel axle bore therein. A first axle assembly extends through a corresponding axle aperture on the skate and is positioned proximate to the bearing for engaging the wheel axle bore and for retaining the wheel assembly on the skate. A second axle assembly extends through a corresponding axle aperture on the skate and is positioned proximate to the bearing for engaging the wheel axle bore and for retaining the wheel assembly on the skate. Specifically, each of the axle assemblies comprises a fastener having a shank, a driving structure on one end of the shank and a threaded portion on the shank generally opposite the driving structure, a nut body is engaged with the fastener. Displacement structures are provided on each of the fasteners and nut bodies, for respectively, independently, expanding the nut bodies. Alignment structures are provided on the nut body and wheel axle bore for preventing the rotation of the nut bodies upon rotation of each of the fasteners. A spring is positioned in the wheel axle bore of the bearing between the axle assemblies. The spring is compressed between the axle assemblies when the axle assemblies are engaged with the wheel axle bore, and the spring provides generally axial, outward forces on the axle assemblies when each is disengaged from the wheel axle bore to facilitate removal of the axle assemblies from the bearing.
