ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to fastening devices, e.g., rivets, bolts, etc. which are fabricated from a thermotropic liquid cry- stalline polymer. The resultant article is characterized by a shear strength of at least about 10,000 psi (e.g., 10,000 to 50,000 psi and higher), a tensile strength of at least 20,000 psi (e.g., 20,000 to 100,000 psi and higher), a linear coefficient of thermal expansion of from about 0 to -3 X 10-5 (in/in°C) and ex- tremely high chemical resistance. The fastening devices exhibit a highly oriented skin. The thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer utilized has an inherent viscosity of between about 1.0 and about 15 dl./g. when dissolved in a concentration of 0.1 percent by weight of pentafluorophenol at 60°C and may be fabricated from a wholly aromatic polyester, an aromatic-aliphatic polyester, a wholly aromatic poly(ester-amide), an aromatic-aliphatic poly- (ester-amide), an aromatic polyazomethine, an aromatic polyester carbonate, etc. and mixtures thereof.
