A fastening element (11) having a torque-receiving means (12) for a setting tool and having a shank (16) bearing a tapping thread (21) that has a free end (18) facing away from the torque-receiving means (12), and that has a thread-core diameter. The thread (21) has one thread (22) having a thread leading end (23) in the region (26) of the free end (18) of the shank (16), whose outside diameter, starting from the free end (18), increases to a maximum outside diameter (A2) and, starting from its maximum outside diameter (A2) and continuing toward the torque-receiving means (12), decreases quasi- continuously to a smaller outside diameter (Al). The thread-core diameter of the shank (16), starting from a region (19) next to the torque-receiving means (12) and continuing toward the free end (18) of the shank (12) [(sic.) (16)], decreases quasi-continuously to a smaller thread-core diameter (K1) [(sic.) K2] of the shank (16).
