FASTENING SHEET METAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed an improved method of fastening two or more pieces of sheet metal by swaging, which is with a reciprocating punch and fixed die systemin a press or other similar pressure exerting machine such as with rotary rollerdies. The present invention relates to a novel, simplified, economical swaging die construction for forming a joint to fasten a plurality of pieces of sheet metal by first drawing and then extruding laterally outwards without obstruction and without shearing, into an enlarged shape, the sheet metal to be fastened, along two or more grooves in the die, perpendicular to the punch, thus permanently, mechanically interlocking the pieces. This improved method fastens the sheet metal with a joint that will have greater resistance against shear and peel tests and with a wider range of sheet metal thicknesses, especially very thin, than is possible with other presently known swaging methods of fastening sheet metal. The methods of adapting this improved swaging system with configurations for joining a variety of product shapes are also disclosed.
