ABSTRACT "Improvements in Fastenings and Seals" A bolted joint between two parts (10,12) is strengthened by means of an annular reinforcement (20) having a sloping face (22) engaging a groove (18). Tightening of the bolt produces a compressive stress around the hole which counteracts ovalisation and fatigue failure. The reinforcement can be a washer (20) as shown, or can be embodied in a bolt head, nut, rivet insert, or other item. Application of the invention to seals is also described.
