Fault detection in a multi-phase electrical transmission line (30, 32, 34) is accomplished by providing detectors (36, 38, etc.) at each end of a line section which detect the current flowing into and out of the line section and output a value of the current. The outputs of the detectors are processed in a microprocessor- controlled relay unit (80, 82, 84) by calculating the phasor relationship between the instantaneous current flowing in the line section and the voltage, thereby determining whether there is a component of the current vector in the same direction as the voltage vector. If there is a component of current in phase with the voltage, then a fault is present in that line section.
