ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fault-protection is added to static AC-to-AC converter to protect the GTO devices bilaterally by adding at least two line bridges of diodes having an inductor thereacross. Fault-protection is extended to a UFC system by incorporating such inductor in the diode bridges of the GTO devices forming the bilateral switches of the UFC system. The dissipating energy is minimized by combining such fault-protection bridges. The inductors may be coupled controlled demagnetization of the inductors is provided.
