FEED ROLL ASSEMBLY FOR A FORAGE HARVESTER Abstract of the Disclosure Harvested crop material is fed to the cylindrical cutter- head of a forage harvester by a feeding assembly consisting of opposed pairs of upper and lower feed rolls. The two upper rolls are part of an articulated assembly permitting up and down float- ing movement of the rolls as required to accommodate variations in flow of crop material. The rear or downstream upper feed roll is close to the cutterhead and carried on a pair of opposite radius arms extending rearwardly alongside the cutterhead and pivoted relatively close to the cutterhead axis so that the roll remains close to the cutterhead periphery as it floats. A transverse leveler shaft rigidly couples the opposite radius arms providing a stable frame for the rear feed roll and minimizing roll cocking or twisting due to forces imposed by a laterally uneven mat of crop material. A pair of feed roll arms is pivot- ally connected to the radius arms, coaxial with the rear feed roll and extends forward to support a forward or upstream feed roll which is journaled on a shaft rigidly connected between the feed roll arms, the shaft also serving as a structural member having torsion and bending resistance to minimize cocking of the forward feed roll. Downward movement of both upper rolls is limited by stops bearing, respectively, against an extension of each radius arm forward of the rear feed roll axis and against the feed roll arms close to the forward feed roll axis. Downward pressure of the rolls on the mat of crop material being fed to the cutterhead is maintained by a pair of tension springs, each connected to an opposite forward feed roll arm about midway between the two upper rolls. Thus, each upper roll may float independently, the articulation of the feed roll assembly being such that upward movement of either roll or the rolls together is subject to the restoring force of the tension spring. However, upward movement of the forward roll in relation to the rearward roll is limited by a stop which limits the corresponding rota- tional movement between the feed roll arms and the radius arms supporting the rear and forward rolls respectively. The down stop for each radius arm is adjustable so that the minimum opening between the rear rolls can be set to suit the crop being harvested.
