ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention refers to a feeding mechanism (feeder) for paper sheet processing machines, particularly printing machines. The single sheets taken from the stack are stream fed on a feed table to the machine while being laterally aligned by means of an alignment device. To ensure it functions exactly, it is necessary that the working area of the sheet currently to be aligned rests flat and completely flush over the entire surface. In order to ensure this even when an underlying subsequent sheet is positioned just short of the alignment device, sections of the sheet bearing area of the feed table and/or the lateral alignment device differ in height with respect to each other, at least during the alignment phase, to such an extent that the sheet currently to be aligned lies fully on the effective surface of the alignment device and that this surface is essentially on one level with the upper side of the front section of the subsequent sheet.
