FEEDSTOCK TREATMENT ABSTRACT A process for converting hydrocarbon materials containing unstable components, for example pyrolysis fuel oils, to a con- stant quality feedstock for the production of needle coke and/or high quality carbon black which comprises subjecting such materials to the following pretreatment steps prior to use in the production of either coke or carbon black: a) addition of sulfur into the pyrolysis fuel oil prior to introduction into a soaking tank or drum, b) maintenance of the pyrolysis fuel oil at above 450°F for at least 5 minutes in the soaking tank, and c) heating of the pyrolysis oil at a temperature of about 850° to about 1100°F for a residence time from between 8 seconds and 110 seconds and at an outlet pressure of from about 350 to about 600 psig. The use of the above steps provides a feedstock for coke or carbon black production which is of constant quality and from which needle coke or carbon black of high quality can be produced.
