A fermentation apparatus (10) with a fermentation vessel (12) having a low speed stirrer, the stirrer comprising a shaft (14) entering the vessel through an aperture (16) in the bottom of the vessel, one or more stirring elements (18) being mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith within the vessel; a seal (20) being provided to seal the gap between the shaft and aperture, the seal being located in a cylindrical housing attached to the bottom of the vessel, the seal having first and second seal assemblies (30, 50) spaced axially of one another to define a chamber (64) therebetween, an inlet (66) opening into said chamber for connection of the chamber to a supply of processing gas, the first seal assembly (30) being located between the fermentation vessel and the chamber comprising a seat (32) mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith and a mating ring mounted (36) in fixed rotational relationship but moveably axially of the housing, a sealing face (44) of the mating ring being resiliently biased into engagement with a sealing face (42) of the seat, the sealing face of one of the mating ring or the seat having grooves (68) , which will provide hydrodynamic separation of the sealing faces upon rotation of the shaft .
L'invention concerne un appareil de fermentation (10) avec une cuve de fermentation (12) possédant un agitateur à vitesse lente, l~agitateur comprenant un arbre (14) pénétrant dans la cuve à travers une ouverture (16) au fond de la cuve, un ou plusieurs éléments d~agitation (18) étant montés sur l~arbre pour rotation avec celui-ci dans la cuve ; un joint (20) étant aménagé pour étanchéifier l~espace entre l~arbre et l~ouverture, le joint étant situé dans un logement cylindrique fixé au fond de la cuve, le joint présentant un premier ensemble d~étanchéité et un second ensemble d~étanchéité (30, 50) espacés axialement l~un de l~autre pour définir une chambre (64) entre ceux-ci, une entrée (66) ouvrant dans ladite chambre pour connexion de la chambre pour injecter un gaz de traitement, le premier ensemble d'étanchéité (30) étant situé entre la cuve de fermentation et la chambre comprenant un siège (32) monté sur l~arbre pour tourner avec celui-ci et une bague d~accouplement montée (36) solidarisée en rotation mais mobile axialement par rapport au logement, une face d~étanchéité (44) de la bague d~accouplement étant polarisée de façon résiliente par engagement avec une face d~étanchéité (42) du siège, la face d~étanchéité d~un élément parmi la bague d~accouplement ou le siège, ayant des rainures (68) qui assureront une séparation hydrodynamique des faces d~étanchéité en cas de rotation de l~arbre.
