ABSTRACT A ferrule for optical connectors has the end of the ferrule, and the end of the attached fiber, polished to a spherical form with the axis of the spherical surface inclined to the axis of the fiber. The ferrule end is cylindrical and of constant diameter for at least a length whereby the periphery of the polished end is at all places on the constant diameter portion. The whole ferrule body can be of the constant diameter or an end portion can be of a reduced diameter relative to the main body portion. The end surface of the ferrule can be preformed to a profile at manufacture to reduce polishing time. The ferrule can be of suitable material, for example ceramic or similar material.
