A process for producing a fertilizer from an organic waste material is described which comprises treating a waste, having a water content of no more than 90 % by weight and which has been alkalinized, with nitrogen dioxide or a precursor thereof in sufficient amount to reduce the pH by at least 2.0 pH units. The process produces an organic fertilizer in which the percentage by weight of nitrogen in the form of oxides of nitrogen is higher than the percentage by weight of nitrogen in the form of ammonium ion.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation d'un engrais à partir de déchets organiques, et qui consiste à traiter des déchets possédant une teneur en eau non supérieure à 90 % en poids et ayant été alcalinisés, avec du dioxyde d'azote ou un de ses précurseurs en quantité suffisante pour diminuer le pH d'au moins 2 unités. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir un engrais organique dans lequel le pourcentage en poids d'azote sous forme d'oxydes d'azote est supérieur au pourcentage en poids de l'azote sous forme d'ions d'ammonium.
