The invention relates to sys- tems and methods for quickly erect- ing horizontal and vertical structural members for use in residential, com- mercial, or industrial construction. The system utilizes building blocks (60, 60', 60'', 60''') composed of bales of straw or other fibrous ma- terial, resulting in structures that are energy efficient and environmentally innocuous. A portable, reusable temporary support system (16, 28) is disclosed. The baled fiber blocks (60, 60', 60'', 60''') are stacked into wall or roofing components. Rein- forcing ribs or beams (50, 50') are provided to enhance the load bearing capabilities of the component, and the bales (60, 60', 60'', 60''') are covered on their exposed faces with a rigid durable layer (58), prefer- ably pneumatically applied concrete. Methods and apparatuses are dis- closed for transferring shear forces between rigid exterior layers, vastly improving the structural integrity of the structural components.
