An optical fiber strain sensor, a method of fabricating the same, and a method of sensing strain (1200). The method of strain sensing comprises providing an optical fiber having at least a first fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a second FBG formed therein (1202); subjecting the optical fiber to a strain inducing force such that a grating period in the first FBG compresses and a grating period in the second FBG extends (1204); and optically interrogating the first and second FBG to determine peak reflection wavelengths of the first and second FBGs respectively (1206), whereby a separation between the peak reflection wavelengths of the first and second FBGs is representative of the strain induced.

Cette invention concerne un détecteur d'effort dans une fibre optique, un procédé de fabrication dudit détecteur et un procédé de détection d'effort (1200). Le procédé de détection des efforts englobe les points suivants: utilisation d'une fibre optique renfermant au moins un premier réseau de Bragg pour fibre (FBG) et au moins un second FBG (1202); application d'une force génératrice d'efforts de telle sorte qu'une période dans le premier FBG se comprime et qu'une période dans le second FBG s'allonge (1204); et interrogation optique des premier et second FBG dans le but de déterminer des longueurs d'onde de réflexion de crête pour les premier et second FBG, respectivement (1206), une séparation entre les longueurs d'onde de réflexion de crête des premier et second FBG correspondant à l'effort induit.
