Controllable fiber optic attenuators and attenuation systems (100) are disclosed for controllably extracting optical energy from a fiber optic (30), and therefore attenuating the optical signal being transmitted through the fiber optic (30). In one aspect, material is removed from a portion of the optical fiber (30), thereby exposing a surface through which optical energy can be extracted. A controllable material is formed over the surface for controllably extracting optical energy according to a changeable stimulus applied thereto, which affects the refractive index thereof. In an improved embodiment, a controllable material is formed over the exposed surface for controlling the amount of optical energy extracted from the fiber optic, and a bulk material is formed over the controllable material, into which the extracted optical energy is radiated.
L'invention concerne des affaiblisseurs de fibres optiques et des systèmes d'affaiblissement (100) qui permettent d'extraire sous contrôle l'énergie optique d'une fibre optique (30), et donc d'affaiblir le signal optique transmis via ladite fibre (30). Selon un aspect, on enlève du matériau sur une partie de fibre (30), de manière à exposer un surface d'extraction de l'énergie optique. Un matériau contrôlable est constitué sur ladite surface, de manière à permettre l'extraction sous contrôle de l'énergie optique selon un stimulus modifiable appliqué à la surface en question, stimulus qui affecte l'indice de réfraction. Selon une variante améliorée, un matériau contrôlable est constitué sur la surface exposée, de manière à contrôler quantitativement l'extraction d'énergie optique dans la fibre optique, et un matériau en vrac est constitué sur le matériau contrôlable, aux fins de rayonnement de l'énergie optique extraite.
