A fiber-optic based thrust load measurement system (10) is coupled to a bearing housing (50). The measurement system includes at least one fiber optic sensor (12) configured to detect one or more parameters related to the bearing housing. An optical coupler (30) is configured to regulate light signals emitted from a light source (26) and light signals reflected from the fiber optic sensor. A detector system (32) is configured to receive light signals from the optical coupler (30). A processor (34) is configured to receive an output from the detector system (32) and to determine a thrust load on a thrust bearing (68) based on the detected one or more parameters related to the bearing housing (50).
