FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a fiber optic con- nector of the type in which a plug carrying an optical fiber is received in a socket and another plug, or other optical component, is received in the other end of the socket, the socket providing alignment for the optical fiber and the mating component. The prior art connectors are deficient in that connectors which provide for low loss coupling are neither simple to assemble nor economical to manufacture. Furthermore, the prior art designs are deficient in support of the cable behind the connector and in protection of the exposed ends of the optical fiber when disassembled. The present invention provides a connector having a plug body which can be molded, with provision for keying multi-fiber connectors, and having simple strain-relief and bend-relief means, and a tethered cover for protecting the exposed ends of the disengaged plug.
