-10- FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a fiber optic connector, and more particularly, to the fastening system employed to couple the connector to a fiber optic cable. Fiber optic cables typically include a transparent fiber encased in an insulation sleeve, a giber sleeve and an outer shell. Prior art connectors are deficient in that the outer shell is not securely attached to the connector, thereby increasing the potential for damage to the transparent fiber. The present invention provides a con- nector with a cable insertion member having first and second annular portions, the first portion having a larger outside diameter than the second portion. A ferrule mechanically stabilizes the cable to the connector and sandwiches the sleeves to the first portion and the sleeves and the shell to the second portion. The cable, including its shell, is securely coupled to the connector.
