A fiber optic connector is provided that includes a component part, such as a pin retainer or guide pin clip, that serves as a spring positioner for engaging a spring so as to retain the spring in position laterally. Typically, the spring positioner is a recessed pocket defined by the aft end of the pin retainer for receiving one end of the spring. The spring positioner serves to reduce or eliminate asymmetric forces that may be induced in an optical fiber and/or the component parts of a fiber optic connector by a spring that is positioned or cocked off-center.
