A fiber optic connector (10) has a low cost ferrule assembly (34,32) that protectively supports, positions and aligns an optical fiber. The ferrule (20) has an outer ferrule body (34) terminating in an alignment passage (34b) and which seats an inner support member (32) within which the fiber extends. This ferrule (20) is particularly advantageous for use with unbuffered optical fibers and adhesiveless connectors.
