A method and apparatus are disclosed which enhance the ability to control fine sand production in a production well. The invention operates to optimize sand control equipment by monitoring the installation, integrity and performance thereof. Monitoring is achieved by the apparatus of the invention which comprises optical fibers, with or without integrated sensors, disposed in a particular arrangement related both to the particular resolution capability of the optical equipment and the parameters to be measured.
