FIBER OPTIC PHASE MODULATOR Abstract of the Disclosure A fiber optic phase modulator produces a pure phase modulation in a signal propagating along a standard low birefringence optical fiber without producing an accompanying change in the polarization of the signal. A pair of fiber squeezers under the control of an oscillator apply two in-phase perpendicular forces to the fiber. Changes in length and changes in the refractive indices of the compressed fiber in each squeezer cause a phase difference and a polarization change between the input and output signals. The changes in the phase of the signal caused by the stresses resulting from the perpendicular compressions are cumulative while the polarization changes are equal and opposite. The phase modulator includes a transducer capable of applying forces to the fiber at high frequencies such that the phase modulator is suitable for use in fiber optic systems such as optical gyroscopes and other interferometric sensors.
