In order to avoid a lock-in effect, and in order to avoid scale factor nonlinearities, particularly in the case of low rates of rotation, it is proposed for a fiber optic interferometer rate-of-rotation sensor which is reset by phase ramp via a digital control circuit to undertake the reversal, necessary to obtain the scale factor error information, of a reciprocal, alternating phase shift not as a function of the angle of rotation, but with a fixed timing, which can advantageously be synchronized with the gyroscope modulation frequency. The advantage of the invention is that even in the case of low rates of rotation, in particular, a scale factor error correction is possible and a lock-in effect, caused by variations in bias in the case of the modulation deviation reversal, is avoided.
