TITLE FIBER OPTIC ULTRASOUND DETECTOR INVENTOR Paolo G. Cielo ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The fiber optic ultrasound detector for solids has a fiber optic sensor, a light source for transmitting light through the sensor, and a photodetector for detecting light from the sensor. The sensor includes a cylindrical sensor case, preferably with a spiral slot in its surface around its circumference in which an optical fiber having a core and a cladding, id located to form one or more coils around the sensor case. These fiber coils contact with the solid surface to be tested with ultrasound when the sensor is positioned on the solid. As the light is transmitted through the fiber in the sensor, ultrasound in the solid causes refractive index variations in the cladding and/or core that allows some of the light to escape resulting in fluctuations of intensity of the light detected. The sensor fiber will preferably have either a cladding or a core which exhibits a relatively greater refractive index change with pressure. This fiber may be a plastic cladding fiber which is single or multimode.
