A shaft for a tool is adapted to have a tool blade and a tool handle mounted thereto at opposing ends of the shaft. The shaft includes a hollow, tubular fiberglass core having first and second opposing ends and having a wall thickness. A polymeric outer sleeve is disposed over the fiberglass core. The sleeve has a wall thickness that is less than the wall thickness of the fiberglass core, and includes a grip enhancing formation formed therein. A method for making the shaft is also disclosed.'
