ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fibrous products from platinum group metal or platinum group metal alloys are disclosed herein for use in the oxidation of ammonia in the manufacture, for example, of nitric acid and the production of hydrogen cyanide in the Andrassow Process. In particular, a catalyst assembly is provided herein including an agglomeration or assemblage of randomly oriented, melt extracted or melt spun fibres, made from a platinum group metal or from an alloy containing at least one platinum group metal. Such agglomeration or assemblage is supported on at least one metal gauze. The pad provided herein when used as specified above exhibits more rapid light-off, better conversion efficiency and an increased campaign life compared with a conventional gauze pad.
