The subject invention provides fibrin-specific and fibrinogen-specific monoclonal antibodies that recognize novel epitopes: the monoclonal antibodies of the subject invention do not bind to plasmin derived fibrin or fibrinogen degradation products; the fibrinogen-specific monoclonal antibody does not inhibit the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin; and the fibrin-specific monoclonal antibody does not bind to fibrin monomer. The subject invention further provides methods of obtaining such monoclonal antibodies by use of germ-free mice.
