ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fibrous mat-faced gypsum board is provided, for use in an exterior finishing system for a building, including particularly an exterior insulation system, and for use in a shaft liner panel and a shaft wall assembly. The set gypsum core of the board is sandwiched between two sheets of porous glass mat, with the outer surface of at least one of the mats being substantially free of set gypsum. Preferably the board is one in which the set gypsum core is water resistant. Means for preparing the board are provided, including control of the viscosity of the aqueous gypsum slurry from which the set gypsum core of the board is formed.
