The invention relates to an apparatus for bonding together plastics material portions, for example, first and second ends of heat shrink plastics sheeting to form sleeves or casings for the protection and sealing of pipeline joints. The apparatus is designed so as to be portable and easy to use with low-maintenance requirements so as to suitable for in-field use. The apparatus includes a base, upper and lower platens between which the ends of the plastic material are clamped during each bonding operation, and a pressure-applying mechanism adapted to apply substantially uniform pressure to the upper platen during each bonding operation to ensure that a proper joint is formed between the ends of the material. Heating elements are provided in the upper and lower platens for heating the platens to a predetermined temperature for bonding the first and second ends of heat-shrink material together. A cooling system is optionally provided for returning the platens to a non-operational temperature after each bonding operation. The pressure--applying mechanism is preferably adjustable to accommodate for any warping of the platens that results due to the multiple heating/cooling cycles over time.
